Intergalactic Discovery

Illustration from National Geographic by JSW Art via Science/AAAS

The Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy has found a gas giant (at least 1.25 times the mass of Jupiter) orbiting the remnants of what was probably at one time a sun-like star that expanded at the end of its life cycle. Of the nearly 500 planets discovered outside our solar system, HIP 13044b is the first from outside our own galaxy.
