Walter Cronkite 1916 - 2009

He bore witness to history in times of social and political upheaval -- protest, riots, war, assassinations and wondrous achievement -- to emerge "the most trusted man in America."

And that's the way it is, Friday, July 17, 2009.

"Today, so much media doesn't try to reach a mass audience, with all its unpredictable diversity and variations. They look for like-minded people who want a view of the news that will reassure them that they're right — that "that's the way it is." But in the welter of news sources, who will they trust to tell them when it's not? "

  1. CBS ran a retrospective called "That's The Way It Was" in place of 60 Minutes. It was wonderful.

  2. Although my Dad was a big fan of Cronkite's "20th Century" series, my family was primarily a "Huntley Brinkley" household. Yet it was Walter removing his glasses and showing genuine emotion at two historical moments that marked my memories... Profound grief on November 22, 1963 and unbounded joy on July 20, 1969. I saw both on CBS.
