AARP's Stance

The commercial immediately following Olbermann's discussion with Gene Robinson:

Media Matters points out the oft quoted figure of those dropping their memberships over AARP's support of health care reform is technically accurate but misleading.

AARP typically loses 300,000 members a month as part of a standard "churn" in membership. The approximately 60,000 members who specifically cited AARP's stance on the health overhaul debate in cancelling their membership between July 1 and mid-August, represented 13.3% of members who withdrew... But doesn't include those who silently shared that opinion.

1.5 million people (83.3%) renewed their memberships during the same time period, and with the enrollment of new members, who may or may not support AARP's health care stand, the organization actually gained 400,000 members during that same month and a half.
