William Ackerman

All he did was found Windham Hill Records and jump-start the finger-style guitar renaissance. He doesn't want credit for "new age" music.

To mark 20 years of being on the air, Echoes is running a series paying tribute to icons of the ambient music the show chronicles.
Audio: PRI's Echoes, an ambient music program on public radio.

  1. Awesome show - Valley Entertainment started reissuing a bunch of those great Windham Hill CDs last year. There's a couple albums from Ackerman as well as Michael Hedges, Yanni, Liz Story, Alex de Grassi, and quite a few more.

  2. Eric's right. New York-based Valley Entertainment has acquired the Windham Hill, Sledgehammer Blues and Hearts of Space record label catalogs. See their site for information about their artists, genres and downloadable mp3 files.

Visit the Echoes site for information about on-air affiliates, blog or subscription archives.

  3. So if I got it right, we shouldn't blame Bill Ackerman for creating new age. Fine... But my torch and pitchfork await those I blame for keeping it alive!
