Sorry About That, Chief

NPR senior commentator Daniel Schorr also fixated on the reference to entitlement within Tiger's apology statement:
"If you are a big celebrity, if you are a rock star, if you're followed around by fans, that gives you an entitlement to do things you would not otherwise be able to do if you were otherwise ordinary citizens."
Charles Barkley, the NBA's round mound of rebound, got it right when he said: "I'm no role model..." Because, from the distance between us and them, we get only a superficial view of those we call stars.

In Tiger's case all we really we know is that
  • he is both a prodigy & a novelty
  • he is very competitive & aggressive
  • he is very skillful & accomplished
  • he is filthy stinkin' rich
And that's really all we CAN know from afar. The rest of what we attribute to Tiger Woods is wishful, speculative and above all fantasy.

Just as I'd hesitate to use the word "beautiful" to descibe a pretty woman I can see but do not know, "role model" staus should be reserved for those whose character we know well personally... Not a big celebrity, rock or rap star, athlete or performer with fans, or anyone else we think we know from watching TV.

But we can wish the best for him and his family... And should.
