The American Psychiatric Association's DSM, a manual of mental disorders, had cautioned against including the bereaved, people who have just lost a loved one, among the clinically depressed.The idea was that feelings of intense pain following loss of a loved one were normal, so they shouldn't be labeled as a disease. Now, the group's guidelines redefine the line between grief and depression.
