Edward Moore Kennedy 1932 - 2009

Teddy
Lion of the Senate. Son of the Commonwealth.

"For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end. For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
-- Edward M. Kennedy, August 12, 1980

American Tune

"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places." -- Ernest Hemingway, "A Farewell to Arms" (1929)

Turning Point (1980)

Conceding the 1980 nomination to Jimmy Carter, Kennedy would seek no higher office than Senate... His ambition: public service.

Encore (2008)

"Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans." -- John F. Kennedy, January 20, 1961.

After a terminal diagnosis, Teddy took the Democratic National Convention stage again in Denver... Exactly one year before he died:

"The torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans... The work begins anew, the hope rises again, and the dream lives on." -- Edward M. Kennedy, August 25, 2008.

In The Name Of Love

46 years ago, and today...
Let us turn our thoughts today to Martin Luther King...
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women
Living on the earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood
That we are bound together
In our desire to see the world become
A place in which our children
Can grow free and strong
We are bound together
By the task that stands before us
And the road that lies ahead
We are bound and
we are bound
-- James Taylor

AARP's Stance

The commercial immediately following Olbermann's discussion with Gene Robinson:

Media Matters points out the oft quoted figure of those dropping their memberships over AARP's support of health care reform is technically accurate but misleading.

AARP typically loses 300,000 members a month as part of a standard "churn" in membership. The approximately 60,000 members who specifically cited AARP's stance on the health overhaul debate in cancelling their membership between July 1 and mid-August, represented 13.3% of members who withdrew... But doesn't include those who silently shared that opinion.

1.5 million people (83.3%) renewed their memberships during the same time period, and with the enrollment of new members, who may or may not support AARP's health care stand, the organization actually gained 400,000 members during that same month and a half.

Evacuation

Blame Friday's evacuation of Boston's 52 story Prudential Tower on a broken pipe that disabled the skyscraper's cooling system, and knocked out the elevators.

Fortunately only 3 people were injured. One was a firefighter who hurt his hand trying to break a fall on a water slickened floor.

It took 40 minutes to evacuate the building. What if it was a fire?
