Author Michael Belfiore was allowed inside to write this first-ever popular account of DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Products Agency in "The Department of Mad Scientists: How DARPA Is Remaking Our World, from the Internet to Artificial Limbs." By DARPA's own estimates, only 2 percent of Americans know much of anything about the agency at all. Visiting research sites across the country, Belfiore was granted access to some of the agency's non-classified projects that have escaped notice by the general media.
