Convergence

Among the award winners honored in the annual White House News Photographer's contest, David Gilkey for his work in Afghanistan:

American media has long showcased excellent combat photography. What makes Gilkey's noteworthy is that it was done for NPR.

Huh?

It's true, Gilkey photographed all the images used in a National Public Radio online multimedia presentation called On Patrol with "America's Battalion" which included audio by Laura Krantz and Jim Wildman... Significantly, there was no narration.

It's not what you'd expect from NPR if your exposure to the organization is strictly from All Things Considered or Morning Edition at the low end of FM going to or from work... But it's possible in a world where web presence expands the potential audience beyond a local radio market, and expands available means of storytelling beyond a reporter-centered narrative.

By the way, the NPR team also took 2nd place in the same category.
